POTS: Why You Feel Dizzy, Exhausted, and “Off” — and How Physical Therapy Can Help

If you’ve ever stood up and suddenly felt lightheaded, dizzy, shaky, or overwhelmingly fatigued, you’re not alone. For many people—especially teens, young adults, and active individuals—these symptoms may be related to a condition called POTS, or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.

At Kickstart Physical Therapy, we see patients every day who have been told “your tests are normal” or “just drink more water,” yet they still don’t feel like themselves. The good news? With the right education, movement strategy, and individualized physical therapy, many people with POTS can dramatically improve their symptoms and quality of life.

Our goal is to empower you to function at your very best. Isn’t it time for you to Kickstart your health journey?

What Is POTS?

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls things you don’t consciously think about—like heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation.

When someone with POTS moves from lying down to standing:

  • Their heart rate jumps excessively

  • Blood doesn’t circulate efficiently back to the heart and brain

  • Symptoms appear within minutes of standing

Common POTS Symptoms Include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations

  • Fatigue that feels out of proportion to activity

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Shortness of breath

  • Exercise intolerance

  • Headaches or nausea

  • Feeling faint (or actually fainting)

Many patients say: “I feel fine lying down—but awful when upright.”

Who Gets POTS?

POTS often affects:

  • Teens and young adults (especially women)

  • Athletes after illness or injury

  • People after viral infections, including COVID

  • Individuals with hypermobility, autoimmune conditions, or chronic stress

Importantly: POTS is real, measurable, and treatable—even though it’s frequently misunderstood.

Why Exercise Feels So Hard With POTS

One of the most frustrating parts of POTS is that movement can feel impossible, even though movement is part of the solution.

This happens because:

  • Upright exercise overwhelms the nervous system early on

  • Blood pooling in the legs limits oxygen delivery

  • Deconditioning can happen quickly when activity drops

That’s why “just go exercise” advice often backfires.

How Physical Therapy Helps POTS

At Kickstart Physical Therapy, we use a gentle, strategic, and science-based approach to help retrain the body and nervous system.

POTS-Focused Physical Therapy May Include:

  • Recumbent and horizontal exercises (to reduce symptom flares)

  • Gradual cardiovascular conditioning

  • Strengthening to improve circulation and blood return

  • Breathing and nervous system regulation techniques

  • Postural education and pacing strategies

  • Safe progression back to upright activity

This is not bootcamp therapy. It’s thoughtful, individualized care that meets you where you are.

Why Individualized Care Matters

POTS is not a one-size-fits-all condition. What helps one person may flare another.

That’s why at Kickstart Physical Therapy in Wesley Chapel and the Tampa area, we:

  • Spend one-on-one time with you

  • Adjust sessions based on daily symptoms

  • Focus on long-term improvement—not just “pushing through”

You don’t need to “tough it out.” You need the right plan.

You Don’t Need a Physician Referral

In Florida, you can start physical therapy without a physician prescription. If you’ve been struggling with dizziness, fatigue, or exercise intolerance—and suspect POTS—we can help guide you safely.
