Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: When Nerve and Blood Flow Compression Causes Shoulder, Neck, and Arm Pain

If you’ve ever experienced neck pain, shoulder tightness, arm numbness, tingling in your fingers, or weakness when lifting your arm, you may be dealing with a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS).

At Kickstart Physical Therapy, we often see Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in performing artists, musicians, athletes, desk workers, and active adults—especially those who use their arms overhead or maintain sustained postures for long periods of time.

The good news?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is very treatable with skilled, individualized physical therapy.

Our goal is to empower you to function at your very best. Isn’t it time for you to Kickstart your health journey?

What Is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs when nerves and/or blood vessels become compressed in the narrow space between your neck and shoulder, known as the thoracic outlet. This area is bordered by the collarbone (clavicle), first rib, and surrounding muscles, including the scalenes and pectoralis minor.

When this space becomes restricted—due to posture, muscle tightness, injury, or repetitive movement—it can irritate the structures that travel from your neck into your arm.

Common Symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Symptoms can vary depending on whether nerves, veins, or arteries are involved, but many people experience:

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Arm pain or heaviness

  • Numbness or tingling in the hand or fingers

  • Weakness or fatigue with overhead activity

  • Coldness or color changes in the arm or hand

  • Symptoms that worsen with prolonged sitting, playing an instrument, lifting, or overhead work

Many people are told their symptoms are coming from their neck, shoulder, or carpal tunnel, when in reality the problem is compression higher up.

What Causes Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is often related to a combination of factors, including:

  • Poor posture (rounded shoulders, forward head posture)

  • Tight chest or neck muscles

  • Repetitive overhead movements

  • Carrying heavy bags or instruments on one side

  • Prior trauma (whiplash, falls, fractures)

  • Anatomical variations (such as an extra rib)

At Kickstart Physical Therapy, we look at how your entire body moves, not just where it hurts.

Why Physical Therapy Is One of the Best Treatments for TOS

Conservative care is the first-line treatment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome—and physical therapy is often highly effective.

At Kickstart Physical Therapy in the Wesley Chapel and Tampa area, treatment for TOS may include:

  • Postural correction and ergonomic training

  • Manual therapy to reduce muscle and fascial tension

  • Mobility work for the neck, shoulder, and rib cage

  • Strengthening of postural and shoulder stabilizing muscles

  • Breathing mechanics and rib mobility

  • Movement retraining specific to your sport, instrument, or daily life

We specialize in one-on-one care, so your treatment is always tailored to you, not a protocol.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in Performers and Active Adults

Musicians, dancers, aerialists, swimmers, and athletes are especially vulnerable to Thoracic Outlet Syndrome due to repetitive arm use and sustained postures.

With over a decade of experience working with performing artists and active individuals, Kickstart Physical Therapy understands the unique demands placed on your body—and how to help you return to performance safely and confidently.

Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?

No prescription is required to start physical therapy in Florida.

If you’re experiencing ongoing neck, shoulder, or arm symptoms, early treatment can prevent chronic pain and unnecessary testing or procedures.
